Back to Black by Stephanie Wilson from UTS
Back to Black re-establishes the manufacturing industry of blacksmithing to Blackwattle Bay, framing its past with a specific material and craft. This will preserve the built heritage of wrought and cast iron in the suburbs surrounding the Bay as well as greater Sydney. The importance of handmade products and the value of maintaining traditional skills will be rediscovered by the public through specifically angled views of the manufacturing process. The existing structures on the site have been used to inspire the new forms, so the workshops visually relate to the past as well as reflect the characteristics of the craft. This will allow a balance between the past and the present, so a cultural narrative will be retained.
